The first Polish-Ukrainian Workshop for Young Scholars took place in Lviv in December 2016. It was jointly organized by the JU Institute of Judaic Studies and the Jewish Studies Program at the Ukrainian Catholic University. The workshop gathered dozens of researchers, mainly from Poland and Ukraine, and significantly strengthened the partnership between Polish and Ukrainian academic circles.

The subject of this year’s workshop is the history of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe, with particular emphasis on the history, culture and heritage of Galician Jews. The main aim of both workshops (2016 and 2017) has been to help young researchers gain familiarity with issues related to research methodology within Jewish studies, as well as methods of working with various types of historical sources. The central question that constituted the core of the discussion during the first workshop, and one to which we we want to return this year is: is it enough to study the complex history of a multiethnic region using traditional methodology of historical research, and if not, how and in what direction should it be expanded?

The call is open for young researchers up to 35 years old from Poland and Ukraine and at various levels of scientific careers (masters, doctoral, post-doctoral students) who work on projects related to the history and heritage of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe, especially in Galicia.

The application must contain an abstract (up to 300 words), a short CV (up to 3 pages) and contact information (name, affiliation and email address). Decisions will be made by November 22nd.

The working languages of the workshop are English and Polish. The organizers will cover the cost of accommodation in Kraków, and possibly travel costs as well. This information will be provided later.
